In early 2024, VYFS launched a pilot child care program on Vashon Island, funded by the Department of Commerce, to address the critical shortage of child care services in the community. This initiative included extensive research conducted by Yve Susskind and Betsey Archambault, which resulted in a Needs Assessment and Strategic Plan to guide efforts in expanding child care access. 

By July 2024, additional funding was secured to further explore the feasibility of the strategic plan and identify sustainable child care solutions tailored to Vashon's unique needs. In response, a dedicated group of community members passionate about solving the child care crisis came together to form the Project Child Care Coalition. This coalition, composed of local stakeholders (Lisa Moe, Abby Cantarell, Jes Cantarell, Alea Harper, Mallory Dorman, Aly Thatcher, Mary Jane McCulloch, Beth Flannery, Ashlea Olwell, Jenny Cassel), convenes monthly to examine strategic approaches and determine their viability on the island.
