Vashon Island Awarded Shared Use Van PDF Print E-mail

King County has provided Vashon Youth & Family Services, and four other local social service agencies, a surplus van to serve the Vashon community. Working together, VYFS, Vashon Household, Vashon Senior Center, Seeds4Success and the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness secured the 11-person van, formerly used by Metro Transit. The van will be used to serve the needs of children, seniors and low income community members on Vashon Island, and will only be used to enhance social service offerings.

The five agencies will share the insurance and maintenance costs equally, and Seeds4Success will serve as the booking and billing agency. Inquiries about van usage need to be approved by the Vashon Youth & Family Services executive director. Vashon Youth & Family Services is extremely pleased to have this additional asset to serve our community and looks forward to working closely with the other four social service agencies to maximize the use of the shared Van.

The van's inaugural journey was to Yakima WA, to transport seven youth and their chaperons  to a prevention summit focused on reducing community drug and alcohol use. In total, 15 people from Vashon attended the prevention summit. The weekend summit was comprised of a series of workshops for youth and adults on a variety of subjects including, sustaining prevention programs, cyber bullying, preventing marijuana abuse and teen leadership workshops.

Vashon Youth and Family Services prevention team is looking forward to making this an annual pilgrimage to support their prevention efforts in the Vashon community.
