Does this mean the Playspace is closing? Absolutely not! VYFS has delivered parent education and support programs for Birth to 6 since 2003. We purchased the building on SW Gorsuch Road in 2011 and have served hundreds of Vashon families here. We are moving the program to new space – location to be determined.
Will this limit programming and support? No. We will continue to offer groups and drop-in programs and developmental screening. We will still teach Incredible Years twice yearly and we intend to expand our work to include more programs focused on building support for newborns and their families.
What is the timeline for the move? We are not certain yet when we will move from the building. Much depends on who wishes to buy it and their needs. When we have information, will publish it on the VYFS Playspace Facebook page and update this FAQ sheet.
Why is VYFS selling the SW Gorsuch Rd building? VYFS purchased the building in 2011, with high hopes regarding operating the Birth to 6 program inside. In 2012, public funding for early childhood prevention collapsed, leading to ongoing deficits in the program and a lack of funds to support the building. Funds from the sale of the building will help sustain the Birth to 6 family support program and other VYFS services.
How does this impact the child care tenant? We received notice from the tenant before we placed the building on the market that would not renew their lease, which ends Sept. 30th. We do not otherwise know of their plans.
